Captains Update: July 2020

There is probably not as much to report as would be expected at this time of the golfing season since we are still getting back into playing golf again in the current “new normal” conditions.

I have been in contact with Malton and Norton GC to check if my Captain’s Away Day event, planned for Friday 17th July, would still be able to go ahead. Although initial indications from the Malton and Norton Secretary were encouraging, sadly but probably understandably, the decision has now been made to cancel the event for this year. We will now look to re-schedule and organise the event for 2021.

My Captain’s Day is going ahead on Saturday July 25th.  The format will be a ‘4-Man’ Las Vegas Texas Scramble and everyone is welcome to put their name down to take part. I am asking for a donation of £20 pounds per team which will go towards my Captain’s Charity - Zoe’s Place. Entry for nearest the pins and 2’s sweep will be optional.

Teesside Union matches commenced on Wednesday 24th June.  All matches this season are being played at neutral courses.  We have 3 matches that will be played on our Saltburn course on July 1st; July 22nd and August 5th.

Since golf has started back after lock-down, the Ladies Section has voted on whether or not to play from the lower or upper Tee on the 5th hole. The lower tee was well and truly the preferred choice.  The hole length from the lower tee box position will therefore be the length that will go onto any new cards that are printed and will be reflected in the details displayed on any new hole signage.

Ladies have also now played in a number of competitions sponsored by me as it looked increasingly unlikely that I would have a Ladies Captain Day.  The majority of the competitions had prizes for each  division so that as many ladies as possible could be included in the winner’s category.  We had a 40+ handicapper win outright in a successful ‘Par+5’ Medal.

The diary is also now filling up - with a Ladies V EGGs match planned for 4th September.  Possibly some Friendly competitions with local Clubs are also going to happen - even the possibility of an Exchange Day!

My next objective for this year is to help Ladies move smoothly into using new handicaps - with us all moving to the new World Handicapping System on 2nd November!  With Christmas only 6 months away it's going to be an incredible year!
