Captains Update: May, 2019

Lady Captain

The Ladies’ Captain vs Vice Captain match in 2018 was rained off. With this in mind, rather dull, chilly weather on Sunday April 7th was somewhat of an improvement and 30 well-wrapped ladies braved the elements in a 4BBB match between the two teams. The match has traditionally been played on Tuesday but the switch to Sunday not only allowed the day to be shared with the Men’s Captain vs Vice Captain Match, but also allowed ladies who work to join in with others they don’t normally meet.

Unfortunately, Lady Captain, Sue Fleck, could not play on the day – she is still recovering from a spinal operation which she had in December last year – but Heather Taylor kindly agreed to take Sue’s place.

There were a number of close results but eventually the Captain’s team prevailed and the match result was declared Captain’s Team 4 ½ - Vice Captain’s Team 3 ½

A special thanks to the catering staff who, as always, looked after the entire complement of players extremely well.

Finally, huge congratulations to Denise Richards, who scored a hole in one on the second.

Men’s Captain vs Vice Captain – Sunday 7th April 2019

This was a great day’s competition to start the proper golf season.

Thanks to Don Stubbs for all the work he put in to organising the day and picking the teams.

Surprisingly his team won  42 – 20……..he chose the ‘Bankers’ and I chose the ‘Tryers’.

My partner Dan White and I lost 4 and 2 to Dale Smith and Don, with Don playing out of his skin. The lively atmosphere in the bar afterwards showed just how much the competitors enjoyed the day and that really made the day for me.

Thank you to all those who took part and as always, to the catering staff for looking after us.

What a great season opening competition for meeting and playing with different people. In my 40+ years at Saltburn Golf Club I had never played with the members of my 4 ball match before, although I seem to remember playing with their grandfathers! It’s competitive but friendly……that’s why we keep the score.
