The old course on West Cliff
The following entry appeared in the July 27th 1894 edition of The Golf Magazine. "A well-attended meeting was held on Thursday, July 19th, at the Zetland Hotel, Saltburn, Mr. Wm. Whitwell in the Chair. It was decided to form a Golf Club and to invite the Marquis of Zetland to become the patron. The original course was then of nine holes and was beautifully situated on the West Cliff, ten minutes walk from the town - an important consideration when one remembers the limitations of the modes of transport of the time.

The club only stayed at West Cliff for two years before it moved to it's present site, at Hob Hill, in 1896. This was probably a wise move since "All traces of the "excellent" Club House mentioned as being on the Links have long since disappeared as have all traces of greens and tees, erosion being extremely active on the soft low clay cliffs."

"Hob Hill" is from the Danish meaning "hill haunted by the devil or mischievous spirit" Present-day golfers may perhaps ponder at its continued presence! The new course was still nine holes and it may be of interest that in 1909 annual subscription for men was £1.10s; non-residents and ladies 15s; ladies non-resident 7s.6d; and there were 125 members. Green fees for visitors were 1/6d per day, or 7/6d per week.

The next significant change took place in 1922 when more land was leased, from a Mr. Blair of Congrave Farm at a cost of £100 per annum, to extend the course to 18 holes based on a design by the great golfer and course designer James Braid. The work finally been completed in 1924.

The club continued to lease the land on which the course was built until 1962 when it was purchased for the princely sum of £1500. Also during the sixties it was decided that a new clubhouse was necessary as the old wooden buildings were in a state of disrepair and were becoming too small as membership increased. This new building was, unfortunately, destroyed by a fire in 1981 and was replaced by a clubhouse which underwent several changes and extensions until it was finally opened in its present form in the spring of 1999. Disabled access to the Clubhouse and Disabled Toilets have now been added. During 2006 & 7 Holes 5, 16 and 17 were improved and lengthened. This has led to a re-survey of the course, alterations to stroke indices and SSI of 70, 68 & 73 for white, yellow and red tees respectively
